Squadrons consisted of 9-12 aircraft of the same type, although sometimes their composition was mixed. A characteristic feature of British naval aviation before the Second World War was the large number of biplane aircraft. This is due to their better flight characteristics when landing on deck in the open sea. Single-seat Gloster biplane fighter The Sea Gladiator was in production since 1938 and was the naval version of the Gladiator land fighter. The deck version differed from the land version by a reinforced lower wing, modified equipment, a landing hook and a rescue boat in a fairing under the fuselage. A total of 60 Gloster Sea Gladiators were produced between December 1938 and February 1939, and another 38 aircraft were obtained by converting land fighter modifications.
